Happy Veteran's Day
Veteran's day has a special meaning for so many of us, myself included. My dad was a WWII veteran who served as a Lieutenant in the army and was a part of the Battle of the Bulge. He was not on the front lines. His job was in demolitions and their objective was to destroy bunkers left by the retreating German army. They were also involved in clearing land mines. It's no wonder he saw many of his own men blown up, even taking shrapnel himself. He didn't speak much of his service and had uncountable nightmares over the years. However, there was one story he shared and I want to share it with you guys. Seems they were trying to destroy yet another German bunker. My dad's men set the charges and lit the fuse. They waited the usual time and nothing happened. So they went in and re-lit the fuse. Again, nothing. One of the soldiers said he suspected a German soldier was hiding out in the bunker and probably extinguished the fuse. Luckily, one of my dad's men spoke German and shouted their intentions to destroy the bunker, get out, and run. Soon, a young German soldier was seen running out the back of the bunker and into the woods. Knowing the poor guy was probably scared to death, no one pursued him. Now that's compassion. Bless all our veterans!
